Population Served:

The Residential Treatment Center serves adolescent girls ages 12-20 who have emotional and/or social difficulties. Presenting behaviors include emotional fragility, low self-esteem, poor judgment, low frustration capacity, negative peer associations, truancy, and other school related issues.

Program Description:

St. Cabrini Home provides therapeutic and educational interventions that will help our residents recognize and manage their behaviors so that they can successfully return home to their parents, other family members, or move on to a less structured environment such as a group home, or to independent living. Our campus-based program provides treatment to 86 girls. Upon arrival, each resident participates in resident orientation, outlining the program and the physical layout of the campus.

Each child’s treatment team consists of clinical, medical, educational, social services, and direct care staff who tailor an individual treatment plan to meet each resident’s needs. Treatment methods are periodically reviewed and modified to build on successes and to continually challenge residents to work toward their goals. Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, youth counselors, teachers, medical personnel, therapeutic recreational counselors, and others combine to form the collaboration of care that our program delivers. Close collaboration of all service departments ensures that our youngsters receive the help they need in a timely and consistent manner.

Clinical staff incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy methods in their treatment in addition to clinically proven positive behavioral intervention techniques.

Family involvement is paramount and we therefore actively encourage family participation in all aspects of care. Families are encouraged to become involved in all phases of treatment and are given various opportunities to provide input and feedback.

Setting:

St. Cabrini Home is located on 600 rural acres on the banks of the Hudson River in West Park, Ulster County, New York, about 100 miles north of New York City. All residents reside in one of four cottages and attend school at the West Park School, which is located on our grounds. Our beautiful campus includes an infirmary which provides for all basic and emergency care. Our facilities also include a full-size swimming pool, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, and ball fields. In addition, the West Park School provides amenities such as a regulation indoor basketball court and a fully equipped weight training and Nautilus room. The spacious campus is surrounded by woody paths and walkways for leisurely strolls.

Therapy:

Residents participate in regularly scheduled individual and/or group therapy and, where appropriate, are provided with medication therapy. Group therapy sessions focus on a wide variety of topics to address timely adolescent social, mental, and substance abuse issues. Group therapy topics are modified as needed to effectively meet clients' needs.

St. Cabrini Home operates an OASAS sponsored chemical dependency program, which provides preventive education, evaluations, and interventions for youth with substance abuse issues, whether their own or COSA issues.

St. Cabrini Home offers art therapy and psychodrama classes for interested residents. These classes provide a non-threatening environment in which residents may creatively express their thoughts and feelings through creative arts.

Education:

Cabrini residents attend the West Park Union Free School which is located on our campus. The West Park School is a residential and day school program for adolescent girls. The school is a New York State fully accredited school that offers individualized academic training for grades 7 - 12 in small class sizes of 8:1:1 or 12:1:1 and is staffed by New York State certified teachers and paraprofessionals. The school offers a continuum of academic services to meet the educational and emotional needs of our students. West Park School offers an academic program aligned with all New York State requirements for a Regents diploma as well as all requirements as specified in a student's IEP. Remedial reading and writing and speech and language instruction are available for youngsters who may require these services.

The West Park School offers recreational sports programs and a variety of extracurricular activities including yearbook committee, cooking classes, student government, and more. St. Cabrini Home also offers the educational and vocational training program for appropriate residents. This program provides opportunities to experience real-life employment, earn money, and receive mentoring by Cabrini staff while residing on campus.

Therapeutic Recreation:

St. Cabrini Home's recreation program helps residents develop social skills and cooperation and provides an outlet for healthy play. In addition to swimming, tennis, basketball, and an indoor recreation center, the program offers ongoing recreational and educational activities such as trips to cultural sites, parks and beaches, sporting events, and other activities designed for fun and to promote socialization and healthy emotional development.

Independent Living Skills & Employment Training:

All eligible residents receive independent living skills training which is individually tailored to build on each child’s prior knowledge. Relevant topics such as finding and maintaining housing, job related skills, utilizing community resources, money management and budgeting, and others are presented in interactive hands-on and classroom activities.

Spiritual Development:

As part of our efforts to respond to the needs of the whole child, St. Cabrini Home is attentive to the spiritual needs of our residents. Voluntary religious services are available. Arrangements can be made to accommodate requests from residents for most religious services.
